Austere by any definition, Gilberto Luna’s jacal along Alamos Creek in West Big Bend was weatherproofed with mud plaster, cane grass and ocotillo. The ocotillo is a cactus-like plant that is not a cactus and which Native Americans have put to numerous uses as food, medicine, walking sticks and, apparently, construction.
