Synopsis
TThe 1870s. As opposed to the myths of popular culture, not everybody was swaggering around with six-irons strapped down and leading lives of mayhem. But there were the exceptions--every bit as evil, bloody and deadly as legends portray. And so too, was the law that handled these outlaws.

In the mold of men like Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp, M D "Shorty" Thompson is just that kind of lawman: Short on stature but tall on guts. Hand-picked by President Rutherford B. Hayes, he is one of best. And since United States Marshals of the 1870s handle desperados, this means just about everybody does seem to be using those strapped-down dragoons and wreaking havoc. For Marshal M D Thompson, its the life of a lawman.

During the pioneering days of America a man's will of iron was either forged or melted by the hardships beginning with birth. So it was with nine-year-old, Jimmy Neilson, the eldest of three siblings.

For three years following the birth of his baby brother Tommy, Jimmy's mother deteriorated until death was a blessed respite in their river-bottom home just outside the town of White Water. Turning to alcohol and gambling, Jimmy's no-account father blamed the death of his beautiful wife on the baby, and deserted the children.

By the time Jimmy reached twelve, it was the sweat and tears of children that carved out an existence in an otherwise hard scrabble world. With his nine year-old sister and his now six year-old brother, Jimmy became the man-child around which the family rallied for their survival. But there was more than just the labor of life with which to contend in the old west, and newcomers to White Water bring with them greed, gunslingers and killers.

What at first seems to be a petty matter regarding a few barrels of wheat, leads to kidnapping and a map of hidden Spanish bullion. With an iron will forged by events that would have destroyed most grown men, Jimmy is the only thing between his young family and murderous claim jumpers. But this time, he only needs to hold out until his messages for help reach Marshal Thompson. Of course, a lot more can go wrong before that happens.

Narrated in the authentically seasoned dialect of a southwestern storyteller, the Marshal Thompson series pays tribute to the thrilling and heartbreaking hardships of our nation's western history. Accurately reconstructing the sweeping landscapes of the old west, these novels document the times and historical locations largely ignored by writers who have not been there. Paul L Thompson actually has been there, and you will feel like you were there, too.
